History
Raticate, the Mouse Pokémon, is the evolved form of Rattata and an iconic figure from the first generation of Pokémon. Present since the very beginning of the franchise, it is recognizable by its large incisors and its speed. The Raticate 40/102 card is part of the illustrious Base Set, the very first expansion of the Pokémon Trading Card Game, which launched the global phenomenon in 1999.
This specific card is a 1st Edition print, identifiable by the small "1st Edition" logo located below the artwork. 1st Edition Base Set cards are highly sought after by collectors due to their historical status and their more limited initial print run. The artwork is signed by Ken Sugimori, the art director and Pokémon designer, whose distinctive style defined the aesthetic of the Pokémon universe from its origins, giving Raticate its classic and menacing appearance.
As a non-holographic "Uncommon" rarity card, it represents an essential part of the original collection, often underestimated but crucial for completing the mythical Base Set. Raticate, although not a legendary Pokémon, played an important role in many Trainer teams and remains etched in the collective memory of early fans.
