History
Poliwag, card number 59/102 from the Base Set, is an iconic representation of one of the first Water-type Pokémon. Its design, conceived by Ken Sugimori, captures the essence of this aquatic creature with its tadpole shape and distinctive spiral on its belly, a detail inspired by the visible intestines of some real-world tadpoles. This card, though common in rarity, holds significant importance as a foundational member of the very first Pokémon Trading Card Game expansion.
The Base Set, launched in 1999, marked the beginning of an era for the Pokémon TCG in the West, introducing the original 151 Pokémon in a card game format. The 1st Edition version of this Poliwag card is particularly historic, representing the initial print runs. Sugimori's artwork for Poliwag is a classic example of his clean, recognizable style that defined the aesthetic of first-generation Pokémon, making this card instantly identifiable and nostalgic for many collectors.
