History
The Water Energy card (Energie Eau in French) is a foundational card from the Base Set, the inaugural expansion of the Pokémon Trading Card Game. Numbered 77/102, it represents one of the essential resources required by Water-type Pokémon to attack and use their abilities. Its simple yet recognizable design, the work of Ken Sugimori, established the classic aesthetic for Energy cards that continues to this day.
Released in 1999, the Base Set laid the groundwork for the Pokémon TCG phenomenon worldwide. Every Energy card from this edition, including the Water Energy, is a pillar of the game, allowing players to power iconic Pokémon like Blastoise or Gyarados. The 1st Edition of these cards is particularly sought after for its historical significance and rarity.
Ken Sugimori's illustration for the Water Energy is a perfect example of his minimalist and effective approach. The water symbol, a stylized wave pattern on a blue background, is instantly identifiable. This visual clarity helped make the game accessible and visually coherent from its very beginning, leaving a lasting impression on millions of collectors and players.
