History
Kakuna, known as Coconfrot in French, is the Cocoon Pokémon of the Bug/Poison type, evolving from Weedle and pre-evolving into Beedrill. Its card, number 33/102, is part of the iconic Base Set of the Pokémon Trading Card Game, released in 1999. This expansion is historically the first to be released in the West, laying the foundations for a global phenomenon.
The illustration of Kakuna on this card is the work of Keiji Kinebuchi, an artist who contributed to many illustrations in the early Pokémon expansions. His distinctive style, often characterized by clear lines and soft colors, depicts Kakuna in a natural environment, suspended from a branch. The artwork perfectly captures the Pokémon's chrysalis state, awaiting its final transformation.
As an "Uncommon" card, Kakuna was relatively easy to obtain in Base Set booster packs. Despite its modest rarity, its presence is essential for any collector wishing to complete the full collection of this foundational expansion, especially in its highly sought-after 1st Edition version.
