History
Metapod is the Cocoon Pokémon, the second evolutionary stage of Caterpie, just before it transforms into Butterfree. It is known for its hard shell that protects it during its metamorphosis, symbolizing a period of vulnerability and anticipation before its full emergence. Its presence in the card game accurately reflects its role in the Pokémon universe as a defensive and resilient Pokémon.
The Metapod card, number 54/102, originates from the legendary Base Set, the very first expansion of the Pokémon Trading Card Game, launched in 1999. This foundational set laid the groundwork for what would become a global phenomenon, and every card, even a common one, holds a piece of that history. The 1st Edition version is particularly sought after by collectors for its limited print run and historical significance.
The artwork for Metapod was created by Ken Sugimori, one of the original and iconic artists of the Pokémon franchise. His distinctive style, characterized by clean lines and vibrant colors, perfectly captures Metapod's essence, showing it in its classic, static posture, reinforcing the idea of its protective shell. This card is a perfect example of the timeless aesthetic of early Pokémon cards.
