History
The Kakuna 54/102 card from the Base Set is an iconic piece from the early days of the Pokémon Trading Card Game. Representing the cocoon form of the Bug/Poison Pokémon, Kakuna is the intermediate stage between Weedle and Beedrill. Its seemingly immobile appearance, often seen hanging from trees, hides an intense activity of preparation for metamorphosis, as suggested by its sole attack "Stiffen" which increases its defense.
This card, illustrated by the legendary Ken Sugimori, perfectly captures Kakuna's essence with a clean, recognizable style. As part of the 1st Edition of the Base Set, it marks the introduction of Pokémon into the world of collectible cards. The Base Set not only launched the TCG phenomenon but also laid the visual and gameplay foundations that continue to this day.
As a "Common" card, Kakuna was widely distributed, but its "1st Edition" version holds special value for collectors. It embodies a piece of history, a reminder of the Pokémon franchise's first steps into a new medium that would captivate millions of fans worldwide.
