History
Gengar, the Shadow Pokémon, is the final evolution of Gastly, renowned for its mischievous and sometimes malevolent nature. It thrives on negative emotions and is often associated with urban legends and dark nights. Its reputation as a prankster and powerful Pokémon has made it a favorite among trainers and collectors since the franchise's inception.
The Gengar 5/62 card comes from the Fossil expansion, released in 1999 and the third set in the Pokémon Trading Card Game. This expansion introduced many Rock and Ground-type Pokémon, but also ghosts like Gengar, significantly expanding the available bestiary after the Base and Jungle sets. The "1st Edition" version is particularly sought after, as it represents the initial print run of this historic expansion.
Keiji Kinebuchi's artwork for this holographic card perfectly captures Gengar's mysterious essence. The Pokémon is depicted floating in a dark aura, its piercing red eyes staring at the viewer. The holographic treatment enhances this spectral atmosphere, giving a unique shimmer to the image and emphasizing the Pokémon's ethereal nature. It is an iconic piece of TCG artistic heritage.
