The History of the Team Rocket Expansion
Released in France in 2000, the Team Rocket expansion is the fifth Pokemon TCG expansion and the first to explore the dark side of the Pokemon universe. Comprising 83 cards in its Western version, this expansion features the infamous criminal organization led by Giovanni and their corrupted Pokemon, the "Dark" cards.
The Team Rocket expansion marked a turning point in TCG history by introducing darker and more aggressive illustrations than the previous sets. Dark Pokemon are depicted with menacing expressions and more saturated colors, giving these cards a unique character that is immediately recognizable. This distinctive aesthetic makes it one of the most appreciated expansions among collectors who seek original and distinctive pieces.
The Most Sought-After Cards
The Team Rocket expansion contains several masterpieces that have become must-haves for any vintage Pokemon collection:
- Dark Charizard (#4/82): the "dark" version of the most iconic Pokemon. The holographic Dark Charizard is the most valuable card in the expansion, especially in the French 1st Edition where copies are extremely rare.
- Dark Blastoise (#3/82): another great classic whose certified high-grade copies are becoming increasingly rare on the market.
- Dark Alakazam (#1/82): the first card on the numbered list, with a particularly well-executed illustration that makes it a collector favorite.
- Dark Vileplume (#13/82): an often underestimated holographic card but highly appreciated for its spectacular illustration and its competitive potential at the time.
- "Here Comes Team Rocket!" Trainer card: an iconic card that transformed all cards into "Dark" versions for one turn, now a symbolic collectible of the expansion.
Why Collect Team Rocket?
The Team Rocket expansion holds a unique place in collectors' hearts. Its "villain" theme sets it apart from all other WOTC-era expansions and gives it a strong identity. Dark cards are visually unmistakable and bring welcome diversity to a collection focused on vintage cards.
From an investment perspective, French Team Rocket cards in 1st Edition and PSA-certified represent an excellent opportunity. The French print run was limited, and demand for these cards continues to grow among nostalgic European collectors. Holographics graded PSA 9 and 10 are increasingly difficult to find and see their value rise year after year.
