The History of the Jungle Expansion
Released in France in October 1999, at the same time as the Base Set, the Jungle expansion is the very first expansion of the Pokémon Trading Card Game. Comprising 64 cards, it introduced new first-generation Pokémon absent from the Base Set, as well as new gameplay mechanics that enriched the strategic experience of the TCG.
Jungle holds a special place in the hearts of French collectors because it was released simultaneously with the Base Set during the launch of the Pokémon TCG in France. For many, Jungle booster packs are among their very first collecting memories, which gives these cards immense sentimental value in addition to their growing market value.
The Most Sought-After Cards
The Jungle expansion contains 16 holographic cards, all sought after by collectors. Among the most popular:
- Snorlax (#11/64): one of the most iconic cards of the expansion, the holographic Snorlax is loved for its charming illustration and its in-game power. It is often the first card collectors seek to obtain from this expansion.
- Electrode (#2/64): with its kamikaze attack "Buzzap" that turned it into an Energy card, Electrode was one of the most strategic cards of the game at the time. Its holographic version is highly sought after.
- Kangaskhan (#5/64): a holographic appreciated for its dynamic illustration and its rarity in the French version.
- Slowbro (#5/64): the holographic Slowbro is one of the most underrated cards of the expansion, with interesting upside potential.
- Tangela (#13/64): although less well-known, the holographic Tangela is difficult to find in high PSA grades, making it an interesting choice for investors.
Why Invest in Jungle?
The Jungle expansion benefits from its status as the first expansion of the Pokémon TCG, giving it historical importance comparable to the Base Set. French Jungle 1st Edition cards are increasingly rare on the market, and high-grade certified copies are particularly difficult to find.
The value-for-money of Jungle cards is often better than that of the Base Set: 1st Edition holographics are significantly cheaper than their Base Set equivalents, while offering similar appreciation potential. It is an excellent entry point for collectors who wish to invest in vintage WOTC without spending the sums required for the most expensive Base Set cards.
